Anne of Cleves (1515-1557), fourth wife of Henry VIII of England and Queen of England from 6 January 1540 to 9 July 1540. The marriage was never consummated, and she was not crowned queen consort. When her health began to fail, Anne was allowed by Mary I to live at Chelsea Old Manor, and later died on 16 July 1557 (making her the last of Henry VIII's wives to die). Etched by Wenceslaus Hollar (1607-77) after the portrait by Holbein, now in the Louvre but at the time (1648) in the collection of Thomas Howard, Earl of Arundel, who Hollar had known since 1636. In 1644 Hollar had moved to Antwerp due to the political climate in England. Lord Arundel was also in Antwerp at this time with much of his collection, and during his eight year stay in the city Hollar made numerous prints from works in the Arundel collection such as this.

Desiderius Erasmus (1466-1536), Dutch Renaissance humanist and a Catholic theologian. Erasmus prepared important new Latin and Greek editions of the New Testament, and also wrote The Praise of Folly, Handbook of a Christian Knight, On Civility in Children, Copia: Foundations of the Abundant Style, Julius Exclusus, and many other works. Erasmus lived through the Reformation period and he consistently criticized some contemporary popular Christian beliefs. In relation to clerical abuses in the Church, Erasmus remained committed to reforming the Church from within. He also held to Catholic doctrines such as that of free will, which some Protestant Reformers rejected in favour of the doctrine of predestination. His middle road disappointed and even angered many Protestants, such as Martin Luther, as well as conservative Catholics. This is one of numerous engravings reproducing the likeness of Erasmus by Hans Holbein the younger.

Catherine Howard (c.1521-1542), fifth wife of Henry VIII of England. She was beheaded after less than two years of marriage to Henry on the grounds of treason, meaning adultery committed while married to the King. Catherine was stripped of her title as queen and imprisoned in Syon House, Middlesex, through the winter of 1541. Catherine's relatives were also detained in the Tower, except her uncle Thomas, Duke of Norfolk, who had sufficiently detached himself from the scandal. All of the Howard prisoners were tried, found guilty of concealing treason, and sentenced to life imprisonment and forfeiture of goods. In time, however, they were released with their goods restored. Catherine herself remained in suspension until Parliament passed a bill of attainder, on 21 January 1542, that made it treason - punishable by death - for a queen consort to fail to disclose her sexual history to the king within 20 days of their marriage, or to incite someone to have adultery with her. This solved the matter of Catherine's supposed pre-contract and made her unequivocally guilty. Catherine was taken to the Tower of London on 10 February 1542. On 11 February, Henry signed the bill of attainder into law, and Catherine's execution was scheduled for 7 a.m. on 13 February. From Birch's 'Heads of Illustrious Persons of Great Britain'.

A portrait of either of two brothers: Hans Sebald Lautensack (1524-c.1560), a painter and etcher; or Heinrich Lautensack (1522-1590), a painter, collector and goldsmith. This print was published in 'Les Oeuvres Lithographiques', a huge series of reproductive plates of paintings, by Johann Nepomuk Strixner (1782 - 1855) and Ferdinand Piloty (1786-1844). Their work did much to popularise lithography, as they showed the technique could achieve all the same effects as other engraving techniques.
